As Octavian approached, Antony’s remaining support fell apart. Plutarch describes messages between the palace and Cleopatra’s mausoleum, Antony’s mortal wound and his death in the queen’s presence. These scenes convey the collapse of a court under extreme pressure, but their dialogue should not be mistaken for a surviving verbatim record of private conversations.
The end of royal power in Egypt
Cleopatra’s death ended her attempt to negotiate a future under Octavian. Cassius Dio describes the suppression of the dynasty and the arrangements for Roman control. Egypt’s resources now served the victor, although Egyptian society and traditions continued. This was the loss of political independence, not the disappearance of the people or culture that had sustained the kingdom.
