Who writes the guides?
The Age of Rome is responsible for this historical library. Its expanded guides were prepared with AI-assisted research and writing, checked against the sources linked beside each section. They have not been independently reviewed by a commissioned historian. Readers should be able to follow the evidence, question an interpretation and flag a mistake.
How we use the evidence
A primary source can be an eyewitness account, an inscription or an archaeological object. It can also reflect a participant’s political interests. Caesar’s accounts explain his own campaigns; they also defend his conduct. Later writers such as Plutarch and Cassius Dio preserve valuable traditions, often centuries after the event.
We identify the work and relevant passage, distinguish later testimony from contemporary evidence, and use museum, archaeological and scholarly research where it can test a claim. Section notes connect interpretations to the source list. A vivid anecdote, a reported speech or a precise army total is not automatically a verified fact.
Dates, disagreements and updates
BC and AD describe the conventional historical calendar; there is no year zero between 1 BC and AD 1. Exact ancient calendar conversions, battle locations and casualty estimates can be uncertain. When the evidence cannot settle a point, the guide explains the disagreement instead of choosing a dramatic answer.
Each guide has its own publication and revision dates. Substantive corrections update the relevant guide and its source notes. Older publication dates record when the original short guides appeared; the expanded accounts are dated separately.
History and playable reconstruction
Illustrations, films, dialogue and composite characters are dramatic reconstructions, including AI-generated imagery. They show an interpretation of the past and are not documentary photographs or independent historical evidence. Gameplay simplifies space, time, logistics and command. A player’s result is compared with the recorded outcome; an alternative game result does not rewrite the historical account.
The historical library also includes events that are not planned as standalone games. Their guides remain available and linked to the wider story.
