Germania, AD 9. Varus leads three Roman legions through difficult country, burdened by baggage and a long marching column. Arminius, a Roman-trained commander, has brought together an alliance against him. Repeated attacks strike the scattered troops before they can form a secure fighting line. Rain, wooded terrain and broken coordination deepen the disaster. Varus dies, and his army is destroyed. News of the defeat shocks Augustus and disrupts Roman rule east of the Rhine. Rome will return on punitive campaigns, but the effort to impose lasting control has suffered a crushing blow.
